Thoughts:

Reading a blurb that leads you to believe the fantasy world holds arachnid-like humanoids sounds interesting and unique, right? I thought so too…and I was not disappointed. I couldn’t put it down! The book opens up to Lourdes fleeing her would-be captors, following the sudden demise of her ruling parents and seeking the help of her mother’s best friend, who happens to rule the most feared clan in the region, reputed to be cannibals. Despite the age-old friendship, her rescuer insists Lourdes unite the clans formally before even securing Lourdes’s home.

Finding herself in a situation with no better way out, she agrees. A man from a clan that is known to be poor and brutal marrying a woman from a clan that is known for its wealth and exquisitely spun silk, and this is expected to go smoothly? The rest of the story follows the aftermath of the siege and the journey of Lourdes and Rhys as they strive to grow comfortable with their arrangement. This creates a lot of delicious sexual tension. The book in its entirety is well written, with realistic intimacy that is detailed but fairly chaste, and enough violence to keep the conflict fresh without being graphic.

My only complaint is the names of some people and most of the places. Some are easy enough, but I was pretty tongue tied trying to pronounce some of the names people sported and of places traveled. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Memorable Quotes:

Oh the tunnel vision of the male mind…

“It’s not like you’ve never seen a female in pants,” I carried on. “Look at your mother.”

“That’s not it either.”

“Then what is it?” He twirled his finger. “Turn around.”

I did as he asked, then choked on my tongue. “What are you doing?” His hands molded to my hips, tracing curves no male had ever dared touch.

“This will make things easier.” He toyed with my pants buttons. “Your gown was a nightmare to remove.”

Flexibility we’ve all experienced at one time or another…

“You’d have frozen in your kilt,” I murmured. “No matter how fine you looked in it.” Flames scalded my cheeks. You may as well tell him you fancy he’s a sunlit meadow.

His lips twitched once or twice before surrendering to a full smile. “You liked it, then?”

“I—” I must be more flexible than I’d realized to manage sticking my foot in my mouth. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

If you liked A Hint of Frost…

If you enjoyed A Hint of Frost, you might consider Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind. It’s a much darker story, but is set in a fantasy world and follows a powerful woman used to leading whether she likes it or not, and an ordinary man who becomes a leader the likes of which he never imagined.

You could also check out one of my favorite books, Dark Lover by J.R. Ward. This one isn’t so much a fantasy, as it is simply a paranormal romance set in present day New York. He’s a vampire king with no desire to rule his people, but she may just be his reason to finally step up to the throne.

Final Thoughts:

Hailey Edwards has crafted a sweet, romantic tale set in a uniquely creative world and full of conflict and uncertainty. It’s well paced and utterly fulfilling, while leaving room for more (which I did just read is on its way :D )! I call this a must read!
