Review: Hunted (Dark Protectors #3) by Rebecca Zanetti
A hundred years ago, witch Moira Dunne spent one passionate night with vampire Connlan Kayrs and walked away marked, bound together forever. For a century, Conn has given his mate time to study and train to fulfill her role as the powerful Seventh on the witch’s council, but time is up and no one, not even Moira herself, can stop him from claiming his woman now. The timing couldn’t be better, as Moira is being stalked by an unseen enemy and relations between the supernatural races are tenuous at best. Estrangement aside, Connlan and Moira must work together to get to the center of this tangled web of deceit, or risk all-out war on a global scale. Hunted is a must-read!

The first chapter of Hunted hits the ground running. Strong personalities, high tempers, steamy chemistry, powerful longing, and unexpected consequences fairly fly off the pages.
Moira is a powerful witch, and we’re not talking Sabrina nose-twitching magic. This is smart magic, requiring decades of study in quantum physics and string theory. When it comes to kick-ass heroines, Moira Dunne is the gold standard. Innately magically gifted, fiercely physically trained, and determined to do her duty to both her people and her mate, Moira is a firebrand of crackling, spunky, red-headed temper and focused power. With the combined lethality of her and Connlan, this is one duo you never want to cross.
I really like the idea that mated pairs share their supernatural skills. It makes them a united front, a team that backs each other up and builds on each other’s strengths… very much like a marriage. It also means Connlan is far above average intelligence, and is there anything sexier than a man who is built, strong, confident, a natural leader, downright deadly with his body and with his energy, AND smart enough to bend spacetime with his mind?
Conn is the most lethal vampire alive, the ultimate soldier. His personality reminds me a little of Christian Grey from the Fifty Shades Trilogy: alpha and authoritative, determined like a freight train, a powerhouse in the bedroom, and incredibly good at his job. He’s not quite as micromanaging as Fifty, but he certainly believes in trying to keep his mate under constant lockdown for her safety, regardless of her 30+ years of serving as an Enforcer for the witch’s council. Their attraction both smolders and scorches. Intense, and as powerful as an atomic bomb, the energy between these two is off the charts.
If this couple had their own series, Connlan could be the new Bones. Yes, I know that’s saying a lot and, no, I’m not kidding! This guy is everything I like.. no, LOVE… in a PNR hero and I want to stash him away for myself!! It’s a damn shame he and Moira only have one book!
Lethal, sexy, AND smart? Just kill me now…
Genuine amusement lit his eyes. “You think I merely hit things?”
Well, yeah. “I assume you play chess once in a while with the king, but other than that…”
He laughed – a true throw-your-head-back deep masculine chuckle. While my brother and I do enjoy games of strategy, some studying is often involved.”
Military strategy, maybe. “You’re telling me you’ve spent the last century studying quantum physics, string theory, and other applications of magic?”
“Of course.” His gaze dropped to her lips, making them throb in response. “I mated a witch. A basic understanding of all scientific priniciples, most notably quantum physics, is necessary to manipulate energy and matter.”
Oh, we love modern too, Conn…
“When did you start waxing? Everything?” His eyes flared with raw heat.
Embarassment wound through her desire. “It’s the modern thing to do.” Damn him.
His gaze lingered on her bare skin before wandering up to her torso. “Thank God for modern. I like your bra.”
Thought-provoking… and a little scary.
Those who claimed knowledge equaled power truly didn’t understand the structure of being in the know. Knowledge equaled danger – pure and simple.
Well, when you put it like that…
“You do a good job protecting your family. Keep doing so, but I need to go.”
“Just what do you think you are?” His gaze dropped to her mouth, which actually tingled in response.
“That’s family, darlin’. Like it or not.” He wet his lips, and she fought a groan. “Our world starts right here. You and me. Everything else spirals out… my people, your people, friends, and enemies.”
The calm before the incredibly hot and sexy storm…
“I believe you wanted to talk?”
His stillness reminded her of the split second before lightning struck… when the air charged and the world stopped breathing. Not by a whisper did he twitch or respond. He just waited.
She suddenly understood why prey froze when scenting danger. There had to be movement to know which way to run. “So, uh, you’re kind of mad, huh?”
If you liked Hunted…
Oooo this one is going to be fun! Lots of great recommendations. If you enjoyed Hunted for Connlan’s allure and testosterone-y magnetism, Bones of the Night Huntress series is your man… er, vampire. The style of the two series are slightly different, as NH is told from first person view with a focus on urban fantasy where the DP series is told from third person and is closer to paranormal romance, but both feature very strong central couples with kick-ass women and heroes who will leave you feeling like you need a spa day to work off the extra energy. If you haven’t yet experienced the phenomenon that is Cat & Bones, start out the Night Huntress series with Halfway to the Grave.
If you liked Hunted for the plethora of different types of supernaturals and the tight family bonds between the central characters, check out Rosalie Lario’s Demons of Infernum series. Starting with Blood of the Demon, these half-demon brothers are sexy, skilled, and a top-notch fighting team when they go after their marks. Their women are no wallflowers either, as each has her own special abilities and unique personality. Angels, dragons, succibi, demons, and sirens abound in this great new PNR series!
This book has it all… action, danger, passion, political intrigue. Ms. Zanetti has created a rich world of supernatural creatures hiding in plain sight of Earth’s human population; demons who can trick your mind, witches who manipulate atomic energy, and vampires both good and bad who have a myriad of talents, from teleportation to controlling nature. This is not some cheap imitation quickie story universe. Alluring in its plausibility, the world of the Dark Protectors is thought-provoking and well-planned. The author doesn’t devalue her audience’s intelligence and the characters hold nothing back, and make no apologies for it!
Even if you haven’t read the previous books in the series, Hunted is absolutely a MUST-READ! It is powerful, original, explosive, addicting, and stands on its own story arc. And Connlan is to DIE for. Seriously, he should be illegal.
