Giveaway (US): The cast of The Vampire Shrink, on love triangles and things that go bump in the night

The Vampire Shrink (Kismet Knight, Ph.D., Vampire Psychologist #1) by Lynda Hilburn
The Vampire Shrink (Kismet Knight, Ph.D., Vampire Psychologist #1) by Lynda Hilburn

Please help me welcome The Vampire Shrink author Lynda Hilburn and her special guests!

Lynda Hilburn: Hi, everyone! Thank you so much for having us here. Today I’m interviewing Dr. Kismet Knight, master vampire Devereux, and Special Agent Alan Stevens from The Vampire Shrink. Tell us something about yourselves.

Kismet: I used to be a normal Denver psychologist until I stumbled into a hidden world of vampires. Now I deal with the undead, ghosts, psychics, witches and wizards on a daily basis. Not only do my bloodsucking clients have all the typical neuroses that humans have, they also bring a heaping dose of bizarre madness to the table. And then there’s the romantic triangle . . .

Devereux: I am a relative newcomer to the United States, only having lived in the Denver area for thirty years. I was born in Europe over 800 years ago, and reborn shortly thereafter as a vampire. I own several businesses, one of which is a downtown dance club, The Crypt, which is housed in a century-old church. I am very good at being a vampire, as well as other things . . .

Alan: I’m an FBI agent – or, more specifically, a profiler. I met Kismet and Devereux when I was involved in a string of “vampire murders” in Denver last Halloween. I move around the country tracking the undead, but since I met a certain psychologist, I have been spending a lot more time in Colorado. My interest in vampires is very personal, and I won’t rest until I discover the truth.

Lynda: So, are you saying that vampires are real? You’ve actually met them?

Kismet: Absolutely. It took me quite a while to accept that the world is populated with hidden, bloodsucking creatures. In fact, because so many humans convincingly pretend to be vampires, it was challenging to sort out the reality from the delusions. There are, after all, many mental health diagnoses where people claim to be someone/something other than they are. Looking back, I think it only took me about a week to become a believer, which is pretty fast for a scientist!

Devereux: (With a chuckle) Since I am a vampire, I can verify the reality of my existence. I have taken on the task of making sure vampires stay hidden, unseen by humans, because most immortals do not wish to return to the days of vampire hunters and openly killing humans for food. We prefer to live parallel lives, using our abilities to attract mortals who willingly offer their blood . . . and their bodies for pleasure.

Alan: Trust me. They’re real. And some are way worse than others. But they’re also fascinating. Not only can they use their eyes to hypnotize humans, but they can mind-read and travel via thought. The old vampires can move through both time and space, which blows my mind. Apparently, the personality the mortal had before the transformation will be carried over afterward – meaning if someone is a psychotic monster before turning, he/she will be that kind of vampire. I’ve met several of those.

Lynda: So, tell us about this love triangle . . .

Kismet: Finding myself attracted to two men has been both exciting and upsetting. Prior to crossing paths with Devereux and Alan, I’d had a long dry spell with dating. I never had much luck with the opposite sex. I’m a bit of a nerd. So now I’m confused. Both of them have wonderful – and irritating – qualities and I can’t make up my mind about how I feel. A complication is that Devereux has a very strong ego and he isn’t used to not getting what he wants. In this case, that’s me. He can be pretty bossy.

Devereux: I have been a master vampire for a very long time, as well as a leader of my kind. I am, indeed, accustomed to having what I want. Meeting Kismet was the most important thing that has happened to me in centuries and I will do whatever it takes to make her mine. I believe we are destined to be together, and so it shall be.

Alan: Yeah, well, I don’t believe in destiny. I believe in making my own luck, and I’m hoping to get lucky with Kismet. We have so much in common: we’re both psychologists, we’re both workaholics and we know about the reality of vampires. I’m not giving up on her just because my competition is a badass vampire.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?

Kismet: Stumbling into the vampire realm has changed my life. Before, I was an introverted academic, and now every day brings a new surprise (some not so good). I’ve been given the opportunity to learn – and write – about a population hardly anyone knows exists. What an incredible adventure. And hanging out with two gorgeous men hasn’t been a burden, either!

Devereux: I look forward to sharing my existence with Kismet, to exposing her to realities she never imagined. One of which is sex with a vampire.

Alan: Oh, yeah? Well, no matter how good vampire sex might be, I’ve got some moves, too, and I can’t wait to show her. We’ll see who comes out on top. At least I can take her out to dinner and eat normal food . . .

Lynda: You can read about Kismet, Devereux and Alan in The Vampire Shrink, then in Blood Therapy, which releases fall, 2012.

Kismet Knight, a brainy Denver-based psychologist with a stalled career and a nonexistent love life, is about to have her world rocked. Not only does her newest patient, Midnight, long to become a vampire, but the teenager insists that a coven of the undead hangs out at a local goth club. The always-rational Kismet dismisses Midnight’s claims as the delusions of an attention-starved girl–until bodies start turning up drained of blood and the hottest self-proclaimed vampire ever to walk the face of the earth enters her office.

What’s real? What’s not? As inexplicable events and romantic opportunities pile up, along with the corpses, Kismet finds herself in a whirlwind of passion, mystery, and danger. But this tough and funny heroine–who doesn’t do damsel in distress–is about to turn the vampire-meets-girl convention on its head.

About the author

Lynda Hilburn writes paranormal fiction. More specifically, she writes vampire books. After a childhood filled with invisible friends, sightings of dead relatives and a fascination with the occult, turning to the paranormal was a no-brainer. In her other reality, she makes her living as a licensed psychotherapist, hypnotherapist, professional psychic/tarot reader, university instructor and workshop presenter. Her first novel, “The Vampire Shrink” — which introduced us to Denver Psychologist Kismet Knight and a hidden vampire underworld — was initially released in 2007 and republished (the rewritten, expanded version) by Quercus Books UK 9/2011 and Sterling Publishing/Silver Oak USA 4/2012. New book #2 in the series, “Blood Therapy,” releases Fall, 2012.
Several more books are planned. “Undead in the City,” an erotic paranormal novella, “Diary of a Narcissistic Bloodsucker,” a satire/parody, “Until Death Do Us Part,” a humorous mini-story, “Devereux: The Night Before Kismet” are now available in e-form from all e-book outlets. Her short story, “Blood Song,” is part of the Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance anthology, April, 2009. For more information, visit Lynda’s website: http://www.lyndahilburnauthor.com
