Thoughts:

First thing I have to point out is the speech. The author keeps up with that Scottish brogue throughout the book, and I can totally hear Sean Connery’s voice speaking. It’s pretty awesome. It’s such a simple thing, but it totally got me. Another fairly simple thing is the way the magic worked. Shape shifters didn’t need to strip down to shift, and when they came out of the water and shifted back to human, they’d be bone dry and clothed. So cool.

I really liked Alan and Hyatt’s outlook on their lives as Loch Ness Monsters. Hyatt actually kind of likes being what he is, loves the water. Alan yearns for his soul mate which would break his curse, but he too loves the water. Hyatt likes to flirt with the humans, but Alan is the one that has truly had lives during his years on land, and when he finds Michaela, he doesn’t plan on letting her go. I also liked Michaela’s desire to live what’s left of her life rather than risk ending up on life support with no quality of life. Under the circumstances, I’d choose the same path.

There’s a cruel and mysterious villain. We don’t find out who he is until just before the final showdown, and the author plays up all the suspects very well throughout, just ratcheting up the intrigue.

Now, let it be said that I actually liked the book. A lot even. However, there were a few things that bugged me. For one, I’m a smut addict, so while the sex scenes were sensual, they were a little short lived and chaste for my personal tastes, leaving me slightly disappointed. Beyond that, I think Alan brought on some of his troubles with Michaela by severely procrastinating having the “what I am” talk. Finally, the biggest problem I had was that I sometimes felt like the story was dragging on a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I like that the heroes weren’t always on the right track with solving the big mystery, but it still just lagged a bit after a while.

The longer the story went on, the more predictable it became, however the final showdown was anything but anticlimactic. The book had a great ending, and a grand finale that I really enjoyed.

Memorable Quotes:

Maybe now’s not the time…

“Do you normally go about stark naked, because where I come from you would be arrested for indecent exposure and your ass would be tossed in jail.”
His lips twitched.
She gave him a hostile glare, furious that he wasn’t taking this seriously. “Do you find something amusing about this?”
“Uh no…It’s just that ye Yanks say ass and that’s a donkey no’ our bum. Arse, my arse would be tossed in—“
“Really?” she interrupted, anger sharpening her voice. “You’re going to give me a lesson on what to call your behind?”
He glanced away nervously and moved closer to the fire.

I think that’s a big fat yes.

“Okay, I believe,” Blake blurted. “Now change back. Can the beast understand me?”
The Loch Ness Monster stared at Blake point blank. He snorted and water blasted out of his nostrils, spraying Blake from head to toe.
Michaela covered her mouth to stifle a laugh. “Oh, I’d say he does.”

Final Thoughts:

An interesting story with compelling characters and a sweet, slow-building love, Magic of the Loch is a fun mystery that will leave you with a smile on your face. GraveTells recommends it!
