Book Tour & Giveaway (US/Int): Werewolves vs. Lycans – who makes your heart pound?

Please help me welcome Sons of Wrath author Keri Lake!

I don’t remember if this was isolated to Detroit or what, but back sometime in the eighties, Channel 20 ran a Thriller Double Feature in the afternoon.  Though I can’t be certain, I think this is where I was first introduced to the werewolf.  Something about this creature fascinated me and at the time, I couldn’t quite pinpoint what had me so intrigued.  Movies like An American Werewolf in London and The Howling kept me sitting on the edge of my seat, wide-eyed, watching intently as a seemingly normal human male transforms into this wild and uncontrolled monster.  An inner demon manifesting itself on the outside—man and beast—sharing the same body.

I’m not going to knock Twilight or Sookie Stackhouse, hell I read all of those books, but something about the modern-day werewolf just didn’t seem to be enough for the story I had in mind while writing Soul Avenged.  Don’t get me wrong, the sexy wolf will always be welcome on my bookshelf, but the kind of supe I was looking for needed to up my adrenaline a bit.

Something much more dangerous.

Cute wouldn’t cut it for the female protagonist I have in this book.  Put Ayden together with Jacob and she’d have him sucking his thumb in the corner with his tail tucked between his legs.  If she bothered to give him that kind of time at all.  And Alcide?  He’d be doing tricks for treats by the time she was finished with him.

So I reached back to those days of wide-eyed horror and pulled some of the more intimidating features of a werewolf, making it more of a monster than a wolf.  And what I had in the end just didn’t seem to fit today’s expectation of this creature.  The beasts I’d created possessed enough power and danger to give Ayden the adrenaline rush she craved.  And so I went with lycans, because to me, it had no association with the lovey, cuddly werewolf I’ve come to know.

The book is a romance … shouldn’t they be sexy beasts?

When readers reach the end of the book, they’ll ultimately discover one of the more significant reasons that I chose to refer to these creatures as lycans.  Aside from that though, there was probably a bit of psychology weaved into the decision.  See, if I had to get to the root of what attracts me to paranormal and all the supes—what separates these beings from the average Joe human and makes writing them so much more fun for me—is that unstable duality going on inside these characters.  Animal instincts battling a human conscience.  But Keri, can’t you get the same thing from a human psycho? Uh … no.  And I’m not touching that.

What I will say is, the more exacerbated this irrepressible appetite becomes in a supe, the more thrilling it feels when it’s overcome by a woman’s touch.  Taming the monster.  Calming the inner demon with tenderness and affection, and embracing both man and beast.  Of all the supernatural abilities and strengths infused into my female character, I consider this to be her most powerful—the simplicity of touch.

Passion is blind in vengeance and love  …Ayden’s suburban home was invaded by a pack of Lycans. The brutal attack is the only memory she carries of her former life. Now, one motive burns in her soul:

KILL THEM ALL.

The Sons of Wrath—a brood of vengeance-dealing warrior demons—band with Ayden to hunt the Lycans on Detroit’s most deadly feeding grounds.

Kane Walker should’ve been her easiest kill.

Unfortunately, the newly bitten Lycan has something she wants—clues that may finally lay her past to rest.  To reach them, she must be willing to submit to the sensual pleasures awakened by his touch.

Time is running out.In seven days, Kane will become what Ayden despises most.  She can halt his transformation but the antidote requires the ultimate sacrifice.  As the beast takes hold, Kane becomes more of a threat.Ayden must choose between her lust for revenge, or surrender to her enemy and discover a horrible truth.

Thank you for hosting a tour stop!
    Also, just thought I’d mention:
Comments regarding Twilight and True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse novels are not intended to knock those series. In fact, they are a guilty pleasure of mine and were only mentioned in this blog post to emphasize the difference between the more vicious lycans of Soul Avenged and other werewolf characters.

To the first question: I like both kinds of lycans.
To the second question: The cover of Soul Avenged is beautiful and interested me first, then reading the blurb of the book definitely caught my interest. Definitely a book I need to read. Congrats on this release and thank you for the awesome giveaway.

I’m a werewolf/lycan fan. Heck, I’ll take any type of shifter. But, I do agree with you that werewolves have gotten rather tame lately. I remember growing up with The Howling, and I had to hide my face everytime something happened.
This book sounds awesome! Thanks for the chance to win it!

Great post! Werewolves are my favorites paranormal creatures. I like the werewolves in Sookie Stackhouse a lot but in Twilight are more shapeshifters to me than werewolves. But I agree that wolves are primal animals, monsters so I prefer them more dangerous.

The book has very beautiful story and I would really like to read about Lycan style, thank you for the giveaway!

I have to admit that I prefer the Sookie/Twilight type. The Lycan type is a little rough around the edges for me :P

I’d say the Sookie types would be my preference… not necessarily the Twilight ones, but that may be more about the movie actors than the characters. LOL

  11.
    Christy Perry

I love Alcide on True Blood, however I prefer the Lycan style when reading. The Twilight style just did not work me in the book or the movie format. Thank you for the chance to win :)

I like to read about both but I have to say I prefer the more primal, lycan style. I mean, they are beasts, right?!? :)

    Thanks for the fabulous giveaway!

  15.

I myself love a more animalistic, primal werewolf or vampire. I like them to have a violent side but also a soft side when they are around their females.

  16.

    Sherri Williamson

I like any kind of Weres…wolves, panthers, lions, tigers, bears..oh my!! hehehe As far as wolf vs lycan……hmmmm it really depends on what is happening in the book I’m reading. There have been books where I’ve said to myself “Oh please, he needs to be meaner!” LOL

    Sherri Williamson

I can’t wait to read this book, the excerpt really got me. And I can’t wait to “see” more of Ayden and finding out more about her.

No cute and cuddly monsters here. I like me men –I mean monsters really scary.

  22.

I love the blurb. I’m really looking forward to reading this.

  23.

I’m a genre junkie but it’s become pretty overpopulated with puppy-dog werewolf types. I really loved the lycans of the Underworld films (with the latest as a bit of an exclusion). Soul Avenged sounds much more like something I’d enjoy than most of the recent ‘werewolf’ stuff.
