Thoughts:

I read Demon Crossings in one sitting, entirely unable to put it down. Ms. Stone is a Master, weaving the best elements of Paranormal Romance seamlessly into an addictive concoction of suspense, mystery, fantasy, mythology, steamy intimacy, and a little horror thrown in for seasoning.

Grace and Aiden, the main characters, are complex, three-dimensional people. Ms. Stone shares their backstories artfully, giving the reader the full picture. Each with enough baggage to fill a 747, they both have plenty of conflict, both internal and external. Sexual tension flares between them from the beginning and continues unabated through the whole book, with several detours into sizzling hot intimate scenes.

The story world brings Norse mythology and folklore into the modern world in an entirely logical way. With stunning imagery, Ms. Stone puts the reader smack dad in the middle of the setting. Rather than a guided tour, her writing lets you explore with the characters as Grace familiarizes herself with an environment that answers her questions about herself, and Aiden shares his love of his home with her.

While Grace and Aiden struggle with their suspicions of each other and explore the strong connection between them, supporting characters provide plenty of inter-personal conflict. Some accept Grace and welcome her into their world, while other snub her and try to discourage Aiden from accepting her help.

The suspense escalates as Grace learns exactly what she is, and she and Aiden prepare to ride headlong into Hell, in an effort to save his young daughter. The pressures of leadership bend Aiden to the breaking point, pulling him between the needs of his people, and his own need to rescue his daughter. In his desperation, he will have to live with the consequences of placing himself, Grace, and his people at risk. Grace faces memories of a nightmarish childhood, and must learn to trust someone other than herself.

Will they be able to overcome their personal obstacles and trust each other enough to battle the demons and hostile landscape separating Aiden’s daughter from safety?

Memorable quotes:

Don’t you hate people who look years younger than they actually are?

“You’re really a doctor?”

Pulling on gloves, he kneeled beside her. “With a license and everything. You’re not even my first patient. Now be a good girl and lie down so I can get a better look at this.”

She wiped her damp palms on her thighs and crossed her hands over her stomach so they’d stop shaking. It helped that he wasn’t wearing a white coat and she wasn’t trapped in a locked room. Statistically, she knew, it was unlikely that all doctors were soulless monsters.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to insult you.”

That big smile again. “Don’t worry about it. Although for future reference you might want to avoid offending people who could decide to give you stitches just for the hell of it.”

“I’ll keep it in mind.”

Remember that old adage about judging a book by its cover…

It looked like a Grant Wood painting with a high cloudless sky and those fields stretching forever, neat rows following the contours of the land in gentle dips and swells. She craned her neck to find the source of the next thunk and saw Aiden next to the outbuilding.

Shirtless, his back was to her, and in a graceful swinging motion he reached down for a log, set it on end then hauled back his ax to bring it down hard. Sunlight glinted off the blade at the height of the arc. His whole body flexed with the movement. He reached for another piece of wood and repeated the circuit. Effortless. Powerful. All strong masculine grace and perfect coordination. Her breath caught in her throat.

She leaned her shoulder against the window frame to admire the view. Even from here she could see a light sheen of sweat covering his skin, highlighting the pull and glide of muscle beneath. She wondered what it would be like to be with that kind of man. Someone who rescued stranded motorists without taking advantage. Someone simple, straightforward and good, with no secrets to hide. Someone with a body like that.

Aiden turned his head as if he’d heard a sound. She withdrew out of his line of sight. She should go. Nothing about her belonged in a place like this.

If you liked…

If you enjoyed Demon Crossings, you might also like The Lords Of The Underworld Series by Gena Showalter, which is also based on mythology.

Final thoughts:

Demon Crossings is a fast-paced read filled with multiple levels of conflict and suspense. It brings the world of ancient Norse mythology into the present in a chillingly logical manner, complete with enemies. For all its complexities, at its core, the story is a stunningly simple tale of learning to trust love.
