ARC Review: Demon Lover (Fairwick Chronicles – book #1) by Juliet Dark
Callie McFay takes a teaching job in Fairwick College’s folklore department. The small town of Fairwick turns out to have a lot of not-so-human inhabitants. She quickly discovers that the recurring dream she has been having every night since she was a teenager, of a dark shape entering her room in the moonlight and taking the shape of the seductive man of her dreams, just might be real. The evening trisks were initially written off to the fact that she has been working on writing “The Sex Lives of Demon Lovers”, but Callie knows all to well now that these are the visits of an incubus. There’s much more to many of the people she meets in Fairwick including herself. Will she be able to banish her Demon Lover back to the Shadowlands before he sucks the life force from her? To read or not to read… eh, whatever.

First off I just have to say that even though this is marketed as a paranormal romance I would certainly call it an urban fantasy.
There’s definitely a lot going on in this little college town. It turns out we have witches, fairies, succubus, incubus, vampires and much more attending and teaching at Fairwick College. The Ganconer, her incubus, continues to visit her nightly. The scenes with him, however, were lacking something for me. I really didn’t find them as hot and steamy as the author seemed to want us to think they were. Honestly they were just kind of weird and creepy feeling. They also imply that Callie’s falling in love with him but I don’t really believe that there was anything behind their “steamy” scenes to back that up.
There were a lot of characters in town that could have some interesting stories down the line. While the author may have done a little too much world building and introduction of characters to make this particular book too exciting, I do have hope for the series in general. There actually was much less about the Demon Lover than I expected from the title and description of the book. The book was an okay read but unfortunately nothing special. I will read the second book in the series to see where she takes it from here however… there’s still hope.
If you liked Demon Lover…
If you enjoyed Demon Lover, you might also like The Sookie Stackhouse Series (starting with Dead Until Dark) by Charlaine Harris and the Vampire Academy series (starting with Vampire Academy), by Richelle Mead. These are both great urban fantasy series that really have some great world building and fantastic characters. If you’re not familiar with the Sookie Stackhouse series, these are the books that the show “True Blood” is based on.
A mediocre book but potential for an okay series depending on where it takes us with the other characters. I’m intrigued with a few of the side characters’ stories. I felt like the Demon Lover wasn’t really as big of a part of this book as I would have thought so I’m not sure if she plans to focus on a person’s story in each of the following books or if it will be more of a “happenings of Fairwick” type series.
