ARC Review: In the Service of the King (Vampire Warrior Kings #1) by Laura Kaye
As Kael dreadfully approaches the coming night of ritual blood and sex, he wishes only to get through the Proferring without hurting the virgin or committing himself to a possible mating, a painful reminder of all he has lost. Shayla is prepared to serve Kael in whatever way he requires, but the needs of her own heart go much deeper. In the Service of the King is a GraveTells “must-read”!

The culture of In the Service of the King is reminiscent of the Midnight Breed series, where all the vampires are born male, cannot be made, and their mates lives are extended by drinking their blood. Kael, warrior king of his vampires, must feed from a virgin human female every three months or risk losing his immortality and the strength of his humanity. If that weren’t pressure enough, none of Kael’s vampire warriors will feed until he does… so if he continues to sacrifice his own welfare by putting off the ritual, so will they. The Proferring, the ritual night of sex and blood-taking, reminds Kael of all he has lost and his heart fears to take even a chance on finding another mate.
Kael. Mmmm yummy, alpha, vulnerable Kael. Ms Kaye knows how to write a gently commanding yet scrumptiously tantalizing hero. In contrast to the sexy king, Shayla is the perfect combination of sweetly submissive and confidently demanding. I loved her graceful courage, her thirst for knowledge and sensual abandon. These two burn up the pages, even when they’re not in bed! The sex is SEARING. Achingly passionate and deliciously unbridled. I might have made a few little sighs of my own just reading it, but if you asked, of course, I’d never admit to such shenanigans. *wink*
There is an elegance to Laura Kaye’s writing, subtle descriptors and skillful turn of phrase, that enhance and imply and insinuate, all without leaving the text feeling bloated or flowery. Heavy on the relationship intrigues, with no fighting or violence at all, this story fairly flew by. In the Service of the King is a novella that concentrates 100% on the connection between our two stubborn soul mates, yet still leaves open a few intriguing avenues to expand the series.
Note: Gonna deviate a little from my norm here and give you a quick excerpt instead of a one-liner quote. This story is too short to give away all the good stuff!
Oh, biting is DEFINITELY allowed…
She bit her bottom lip to restrain the smile threatening to erupt.
He growled. “What did I tell you about biting yourself?”
The tension in his voice and flashing gold behind his dilated eyes thrilled her and reawakened her body. “Well, someone ought to,” she whispered.
His mouth dropped open and she watched in awe as his fangs elongated. She squeaked as he easily pushed her further up on the bed and crawled between her thighs.
“Just someone, Shayla? Anyone?” He braced himself with one arm while his other hand…
You’ll just have to read the book to find out the rest! *grin* Trust me, it’s worth it!
If you liked In the Service of the King…
If you enjoyed In the Service of the King , for the vampire lore and the steamy passion between the two main characters, you will almost certainly enjoy the Black Dagger Brotherhood series (starting with Dark Lover) by J. R. Ward and the Midnight Breed series (starting with Kiss of Midnight) by Lara Adrian. Both series feature sexy warrior vampire males who love their ladies as much as they love to dominate… both in and out of the bedroom.
