ARC Review: Wicked Nights (Angels of the Dark #1) by Gena Showalter
As a warrior angel who’s spent thousands of years destroying demons, Zacharel is well known among all supernatural creatures for his ruthlessness. It’s that icy personality that has him on the verge of losing his wings – until Annabelle Miller comes along and that iciness starts to thaw. Having spent the past 4 years of her life in an institution for the criminally insane for a crime she didn’t commit, Annabelle needs the gorgeous angel’s protection against the demons who are hunting her. With Annabelle’s life on the line, this is one mission Zacharel refuses to fail. Wicked Nights is a GraveTell must-read!

As the first book in the Lords of the Underworld spinoff series, Wicked Nights is a sexy, compelling story with a fantastic cast of characters whom readers are sure to love.
Zacharel, an angel first introduced in the Lords series, is a cold, merciless individual. He lives for one purpose- fighting demons. Lately, though, Zacharel has grown too ruthless for his Deity’s liking, which is how he ends up the new leader of an army of rebellious angels who are also close to being banished from the Heavens. Being in charge of the most disobedient angels around is hardly an easy job, but Zacharel’s future depends on proving to his Deity that he and his soldiers are fit to remain in the Heavens. When his latest mission leads him to a mental institution for criminals, Zach comes across Annabelle Miller, a woman who seems to be the target for the demons outside the establishment.
Annabelle Miller’s life has been hell for the past 4 years. After being convicted of a horrible crime she wasn’t responsible for, she was sentenced to live at the Moffat County Institution for the Criminally Insane. It doesn’t help that she can see things no one else can see – gruesome monsters who love to torment her. When Zacharel appears, Annabelle finally gets some answers as to why she can see the things she does. The bad news? The demons tracking her will do anything to get her, and so will their king. If Annabelle hopes to survive, she’ll need Zacharel’s help.
Ever since we met Zacharel, I’ve been so intrigued by him. I’d been waiting for the day when I’d get to learn more about this cold-hearted warrior, and that day finally came. There’s so much more to Zacharel than just a cruel soldier, as readers of the Lords of the Underworld series know. Once you get inside his head and find out why he is the way he is, it makes so much sense. And seeing him desire someone for the first time in his life was so amusing and sweet. He’s never had any interest in anyone in a romantic way before, but Annabelle tempts him like crazy. And I really think the two of them balance each other very well. Annabelle’s not afraid to stand up to the arrogant angel, which is kind of hilarious since Zach isn’t exactly used to people defying him, especially not a small human woman.
Speaking of Annabelle, I really liked her. She’s tough yet compassionate, and also strong. She didn’t let everything that has happened to her break her, and considering the stuff she’s been through, that’s pretty damn amazing. She’s kind of badass, too. The girl can hold her own against demons, which is awesome.
The secondary characters were all fascinating. We get to meet some of the angels in Zacharel’s army, and I can’t wait to learn more about the ones we were introduced to. The warriors in Zach’s legion have dark pasts, and I’m definitely curious to find out more about those pasts.
Wicked Nights was an awesome start to a great new series by Gena, who’s such a talented writer. And if you’re wondering if any familiar faces pop up in this book…well, you’ll just have to read Wicked Nights and find out! 😉
I don’t think the word “modest” is in Zacharel’s vocabulary…
“Look, Winged Wonder. Get me out of here, then we’ll hammer out the details about where I’m staying, okay?”
“Winged Wonder,” he said, nodding. “I find that I do not mind that one. It fits.”
“Captain Modesty fits better,” she muttered.
“I disagree. Winged Wonder is clearly the better choice for a man such as me.”
He has a point…
“You are beyond frustrating,” she grumbled. “Why can’t you do what I ask you to do without issuing a million questions first?”
“I could say the same to you.”
“I don’t- Argh.” She raised a fist at him. “So maybe I do ask a lot of questions. So what. Anyone in my position would do the same. Besides, I’m a girl and that’s my job. You’re a boy. You’re supposed to pound your chest with your fists and grunt, then do everything in your power to please me.”
“Hardly. The man you just described is more likely to knock you over the head with a club and drag you away by the hair.”
If you liked Wicked Nights…
You should definitely check out Gena’s Lords of the Underworld series, beginning with The Darkest Night. The Lords series takes place in the same world as the Angels of the Dark series, and by reading the Lords books readers will have a better understanding of that world. Plus, Zacharel makes many appearances in the Lords books!
You might also like Covet, book 1 in the Fallen Angels series by JR Ward (check out the GraveTells review for Covet here.) This series also revolves around some hot, badass angels like Zacharel and his army. The world is well-developed and Jim and his crew of angels have to take on some dangerous missions, same as Zach and his soldiers.
Romantic and captivating, Wicked Nights was impossible to put down. I can see myself loving the Angels of the Dark books just as much as the Lords of the Underworld series, and I do love those sexy Lords. 😉 Fans of paranormal romance need to check this book out! Wicked Nights is a GraveTells must-read!
