Book Tour & Gìveaway (Int): DVK chats with Laura Kaye and In the Service of the King’s Kael & Shayla
How often do you get to chat with a king?
Not so often, even on GraveTells! I recently had the honor of sitting down with January 2012 Readers Choice Favorite Author Laura Kaye, and Kael & Shayla from her smokin’ hot new novella, In the Service of the King. Read on to see what they had to say!
The setting: Laura & DaVinciKittie are riding in a luxury sedan headed toward the vampires’ secret lair, both blindfolded for secrecy. The leather seats smell warm and feel soft, and we both relax as we drive through the Northern Irish countryside and imagine what awaits us later tonight.
DaVinciKittie (DVK): Laura, congratulations on all your recent awards! You’ve really got some great momentum going. Can you tell us about your upcoming projects? Any new menage on the horizon? M/m? *wink*
Laura Kaye (LK): Thank you! It’s been an exciting couple of months, and it’s just been thrilling that I received some debut author nods and North of Need received so many accolades.
I have so many upcoming projects! I’m writing Book 3 in the Hearts of the Anemoi series, South of Surrender (which releases in September). I have an erotic women’s fiction to revise in March. And any day now I should be receiving edits on my second book in my Vampire Warrior Kings series, now officially called Seduced by the Vampire King (releases this summer).
I love m/m. I have to be honest here. LOVE it. Love to read it, love to write it. I have some ideas, but nothing currently in the works. I’ll have to fix that, though, won’t I?
DaVinciKittie (DVK): I imagine there are some aspiring authors in your fan base. What advice would you give them on finding the right critique partner? Where do you even start looking?
LK: The first advice I would offer is this: do it. Find a critique partner. Not a friend or a family member, but someone else pursuing writing and publication as a profession. One way to find possible critique partners is to join writers’ organizations. I belong to half a dozen, mostly chapters of the Romance Writers of America (RWA), but I also belong to Savvy Authors which I love. My regular critique partners are all members of my local RWA chapter. Most writings are in need of someone else who will read their work, so offer to read in return and you’re likely to find some willing volunteers. It might take a few exchanges to find out if you’re a match, but it’s worth it.
DVK: Do you ever have mental conversations or arguments with your characters?
LK: Uh, I’m a writer. The answer to that is unequivocally yes. Some of my best friends are imaginary! *winks*
DVK: Vlad the Impaler (historical version – not JF’s): national hero or guy with deep-seated emotional issues and psychopathic tendencies?
LK: LOL Vlad impaled stuff. Like, a lot of stuff. I’m leaning towards the emotional issues and psychopathic tendencies.
DVK: If you met a super sexy vampire one night while walking home would you…
a) Run in terror
b) Smile, and say “Nice to meet ya, see ya later, don’t bite me!”
c) Say, “Bite me. I wanna know if I’m writing this right.”
d) Pull out a stake and give him what for
e) Jump his bones
f) Take him home and have a tag team event
LK: Ooh Ooh Ooh!! C! Definitely C. And probably E too! After all, the biting and the sexin’ go together! Especially if it was Zsadist… Or Rhage… Or Vishous… Or Wrath… Or Butch… Oh, wait, what were we talking about?
DVK: Most unbelievable place you’ve had sex?
LK: Bwahaha! Um. *thinking* *thinking* *blushing* Next!
DVK: Most embarrassing thing one of your kids has said in public and who/what was it about?
LK: See, that supposes I get embarrassed easily, which, despite my last answer (grins), I don’t! This was cute, though: When my oldest daughter was about 3, we were walking up the hall to her classroom in her child care center, and she lifted her t-shirt all the way up and said, in a very loud voice, “When I grow up I’m going to have big boobies just like you, Mommy.” And, yes, of course there were quite a few other parents in the hallway, too.
We arrive at our destination, remove the blindfolds, and exit the car into some sort of cavernous underground garage. A tall, handsome man with a braid is waiting, introduces himself as Liam, the king’s second-in-command.
“Hello, I am Liam,” the big warrior says.
“Laura,” Laura replies, holding out her hand. His big grip engulfs hers. “I’m the author lady. And this is DaVinciKitti.”
Liam quirks an eyebrow as he shakes DVK’s hand. “So, should I call you DaVinci or Kitti?” His fangs flash as he grins.
DVK blushes, but smiles flirtatiously and eyes Liam up and down… thoroughly. “You can call me whatever you want, cutie.” A quick grin.
“This way. We have everything set up inside. And the King and Queen await your arrival.”
We walk into the posh reception and take our seats as Liam chatters good-naturedly. Laura and DVK take seats on a plush couch.
A flurry of activity sounds out from the hallway, and the King walks in, a commanding air around him. He scans the room once and then holds out a hand for his queen. Individually, they are stunning. Together they’re absolutely breathtaking. They move around one another as if they’re connected, two parts of a whole. And they look at one another as if speaking without talking.
Laura and DVK rise and warm greetings are exchanged before we all resume seats.
DVK: Shayla, have you had a chance to continue your studies since moving in here? Have any of the manuscripts in the library caught your eye yet?
“I have.” Shayla smiles, her mismatched eyes bright and excited. “I’m in the process of inventorying the library and manuscripts now. And I’m changing my thesis to work on some of the manuscripts I’ve discovered. It’s a big of a juggling act, but it’s working out all right.”
DVK: How are you adapting to being Queen? Have you taken on any new responsibilities? What has been your biggest challenge since becoming Queen?
“I don’t know. I still feel like me, just, you know, I used to crave ice cream, and now, well…” She glances up to Kael, who strokes his knuckles over her suddenly pink cheeks. “Outside of the library work, I’ll ultimately play a role in the Electorate Council, but that’s still in the works. I’m not sure what my biggest challenge is. Everything is so different, but it also feels just right.”
DVK: What is your favorite part of the day?
“My favorite part of the day is when the night wanes and sunrise nears, because I know that means Kael and I will have time alone and away from the others.”
DVK: Kael, what has been the general reaction of your warriors to your mating? Have more of them paired up as well?
“To a male, they are devoted to me and our queen. I think they might fear her more than me.”
Shayla laughs. “They do not. But it is kinda like living in a frat house sometimes. A 700-year-old frat house, with really big frat boys, so someone has to keep them in line.”
Kael grins, and it brightens his whole face, and reveals the sharp tips of his fangs. “See what I mean? To answer your question, none but myself, Ronan, and Marcas are mated.”
Shayla looks at Liam, standing guard at the door. “Not yet anyway.”
Liam winks at her in return.
DVK: I know children might be a tough subject for you, but have you and Shayla talked about starting your own family?
The King and Queen look at one another for a long moment, more of that silent communication passing between them. Shayla squeezes Kael’s hand. “When we’re ready, I will love to carry our newling.”
Kael presses a kiss to her temple. “But we have time, and I want you to feel settled in before we begin thinking about a family.” Shayla nods, and they share another silent exchange.
DVK: So, when you’re not spending time with your lovely mate, what exactly do you do as king?
“I can’t divulge all of my activities for fear the information falls into the wrong hands. But suffice it to say we must remain on constant guard against the Soul Eaters – collecting intelligence from various sources, running regular patrols, eradicating nests when we find them. And, of course, I hold a seat on the European Electorate Council, among other duties.”
DVK: Do the other unmated vampire kings keep the same traditions, with the Proffering, as you did before Shayla?
“If by that question you’re asking if they all require the Proffereds to be trained as submissives, no. That was my effort at restraint.” .He smiles at Shayla. “I’m glad it didn’t work.”
DVK: Speaking of the Proffering, Kael what ever did you do with the goblet of Shayla’s blood?
Shayla’s face goes blood red. Kael shifts in his seat and his tongue strokes over one suddenly longer fang. “Next question,” he says in a raspy voice.
Shayla ducks her face into Kael’s neck. “Kael,” she whispers, “I need…”
Kael strokes her hair. “Yes, dear heart.” He turns to DVK. “I’m sorry, but we must go now.” Holding Shayla’s hand, he rises, extending a hand to DVK and Laura. Desperate erotic energy is rolling off the couple now. “We enjoyed the chance to speak with you, and with all those blog readers out there.”
Shayla grasps Laura’s hand. “Thank you for everything.”
Now Laura’s the one blushing. “No, thank you. It was really great meeting both of you in person. You look just like you did in my imagination.”
In a flurry of movement, Liam is holding the door open and the king and queen depart. Kael’s gruff voice rumbles from the hallway followed by Shayla’s laughter.
DVK: Well, they were in a hurry, huh? Laura, thank you as well. I’ve had a great time.
“Me too! I always love spending time at GraveTells!”
