This is the first book I’ve read in Marie Force’s Gansett Island series, and my immediate first impression is one of history, between all the characters in the series, and to a lesser degree, between the two leads in this story. Tobias Fitzgerald “Slim” Jackson Junior (holy mouthful of name!) is considerate, charming, and sexy, and Erin Barton is sweet, hesitant, and a little skittish.
If rakish sex appeal, quick wit, and sharp intelligence could be captured in a scent, whatever he wore did the trick for her.
This story world is obviously very mature—and with 15 books in its backlog, it should be. So many secondary characters, many of them established or blossoming couples, make an appearance in Desire After Dark. Fans of the series will likely be thrilled with these progressive glimpses into the characters’ lives and with how Ms. Force continues to build and nurture upcoming plot arcs. New readers, like me, should have no trouble picking up the threads of past storylines and taking the tantalizing bait that leads to still-developing plot arcs. Sure, there are a fair amount of names to sort through, but I found it to be more pleasure than chore, especially since several of those alternative threads feature steamy and varied sex scenes. Yum!
“What about them?”
“When we would FaceTime, I became obsessed with your lips.” He rubbed his finger over her lips. “I would think about your mouth and how badly I wanted to kiss you and how much I wanted…” No. Too far. Too much.
“What did you want? Say it.”
“I wanted to see your lips wrapped around my cock. I wanted to see your mouth fall open in surprise when I made you come. I wanted to hear you screaming my name and leaving scratches on my back. I thought about your mouth obsessively. But not just your mouth.”
“What else?” she asked, her voice a faint whisper.
So many feels!! This book is a feast of emotional stimuli, mostly of the happy and sappy variety, and I loved that. Too many stories I’ve read lately have focused on torrid conflict and drama. Sometimes, a lovely traditional HEA is just what i need, and that was definitely true with Desire After Dark. And of all the secondary story lines in this book, I most enjoyed Mac and Maddie’s dynamic. I’m looking forward to reading their full story.
“I can’t believe you’ve got any gas left in your tank after yesterday.”
“My tank is fully recharged and ready for more of the same.”
Erin cracked up laughing. “You’re incorrigible.”
“You love that about me.”
Her heart staggered at his use of the word love. “And you suffer from a terrible lack of self-esteem. I worry about that.”
“I know. It’s a problem I’m trying to overcome.” He nudged her hair out of his way and placed hot, openmouthed kisses on her neck that made her legs feel wobbly under her.
Desire After Dark has some hilarious moments and some incredibly heartfelt ones. Fans of Nora Roberts will adore this book and this series, with all of its humor and family and happy endings, balanced by struggles and challenges that test the characters emotionally and as couples. I love that the story arcs for some of these couples continue well into other books, leaving the reader with precious, satisfying glimpses into their ongoing HEAs. Even fifteen books into this series, I can see why it is so popular with readers and why the Gansett Island books have made so many best seller lists.
