Lethal Lies (Blood Brothers #2) by Rebecca Zanetti #BookReview #excerpt

“Who are you?” she whispered. What had she been thinking to jump into his truck?
“Just a private eye, Anya.”
“This is crazy. It’s all so crazy.” Her voice sounded hysterical, so she tried to calm herself, rubbing her hands on her jeans. He covered one of her hands with his as if trying to offer comfort. She frowned and grasped his hand, turning it over. A long scar ran along his lifeline. “What happened?”
He glanced down. “I formed a family.” At her tilted head, he smiled. “Blood brothers for life.”
Past hurts and strong ties lived in his words.

Lethal Lies is the second book in Rebecca Zanetti’s Blood Brothers romantic suspense series about a trio of genetically enhanced private investigators hunting a serial killer.

“I have two brothers, and if anything happened to either one of them, I’d lose my fuckin’ mind. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to save them, and if I couldn’t, nothing would stop me from seeking vengeance.”
“Are these genetic brothers or the ones who probably have matching scars on their hands?” She hadn’t been able to get his hand out of her head. That scar he’d shown her had provided insight into him, and she wanted more.
“Those two are blood brothers. But I do have a genetic one,” he said, his voice thoughtful. “He’s a good guy. Just met him.”
There were more out there like him? He was being incredibly fair, to see her side and admit his own motivations in life. “Man, you guys hit the genetic jackpot.”
He barked out a laugh. “Oh, darlin’. You have no idea.”

Oh, Heath. What a sweetheart. Here’s this badass guy on the run from his past, a man who at first look seems scary and capable of intense, lightning fast violence, and all he really wants is to protect people. He’s a big softie when it comes to women, children, and animals in danger, and that’s the only time he lets his rage out.

“Look at me, all flush with power.”
“Hmmm.” He pressed her into the bed. “Power, huh? You might want to watch the attitude, or I’ll make you beg.” He was teasing, but interest leaped into her eyes.
She levered up and sank her teeth into his bottom lip before dropping back down. “I do love a good threat.”

Where Heath is—naturally—all alpha badass, Anya is much more fragile. Of course, she’d never admit that, and she’s determined to find the serial killer. As a criminal psychologist, she’s perfectly suited to getting inside the Copper Killer’s head.

“I don’t want to be the scared little girl hiding somewhere while you go after the bad guy. I’m the key to this guy’s obsession, like it or not.”

I love how Anya says pretty much anything that comes into her head.

“All right. Let me get this straight. We’re going undercover to flush out a killer who’s obsessed with me, and you’re offering to play at being my man for real with no strings or future?” She hoisted the bag onto her shoulder. “That’s some ego. Are you that good in bed?”
“Yes.” And that was definite interest in her eyes.

Rebecca Zanetti has a diabolical imagination. This series, like the Sins Brothers before it, pits good, loyal, compassionate soldiers and their equally upstanding women against some of the coldest, cruelest, most calculating men and women ever created. The good vs. evil theme is loud and proud, even if the heroes do toe the line between good guy and questionably detached.

“I appreciate the support, but I can’t do a relationship now.”
“Sometimes they grab you by the neck, toss your ass on the ground, and grind your heart into pulp until you give in,” Ryker said, flashing a dimple.

The bond between the brothers is so tight it’s jealousy inducing. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be part of that?

While I always enjoy Ms. Zanetti’s writing, the Blood Brothers series has, so far, been a tougher read than her others. I really enjoyed the Sins Brothers, based in the same story universe, and the hero archetype is very similar (alpha badass males protecting their women), so I suspect the element I’m not connecting with here is the thriller aspect. I’ve struggled to get through the suspenseful scenes and psychological aspects of these two stories that are based around tracking a brutal serial killer. I enjoyed the way Lethal Lies ended though, and am looking forward to how the final book in the series will play out.

If the paranormal elements of the story—the brothers’ subtle, more-than-human skills—snag your interest, check out Ms. Zanetti’s Sins Brothers series. Also romantic suspense, Sins Brothers shares the same story universe as Blood Brothers. This new series actually spun out of Sins Brothers, but you don’t need to read one to enjoy the other. The older series focuses more on military targets, where Blood Brothers is set in pursuit of a serial killer. Both sets of heroes are genetically enhanced. She swallowed and met his gaze.
She clicked her tongue. “I’ll keep your offer in mind.”
“You do that.” He maintained a low and calm voice. “While you’re considering, let’s look at the situation. You have publicly made me your fiancé in order to draw out a killer, which means I have to act as such. Any halfway intelligent law enforcement officer or private investigator would keep his redheaded fiancée very close after the stunt you just pulled. If you’re not with me, the killer is going to be very suspicious.”
She stilled, expressions crossing her face rapidly. “That’s a good point,” she said slowly.
Yeah. Sometimes reality helped him out a little. Plus, the killer had a hard-on for her, and he must already have plans to take her at some point. She’d just upped the timeline. “In addition, you need protection around the clock now, and I’m willing to provide that. So while you’re keeping my offer in mind, we’ll be staying in the same hotel room or same apartment.” He made sure he had her full attention. “While we plan the wedding, of course.”
Her challenging smile thrilled something inside him. “That’s fair.”
He stepped back to give her some space. “Good. Are you ready?”
“Yes.” She looked around the room. “I do have to ask. What if I didn’t agree with you about your keeping secrets from me? Considering people shoot at you, and I’m going to be at your side, it seems fair that you tell me who these people are.” She cocked her head to the side and focused back on him.
“I have more immediate concerns than being fair,” he said smoothly. “You brought me into this mess.”
A frown drew down her eyebrows. “Listen. I want an answer about you.”
“I just gave you one.” At her mulish expression, he searched for better words that wouldn’t end in an argument.
Suddenly, the door blew wide open and bounced loudly off the table. “Anya!” he yelled, jumping for her.
