Holy. Baby. Jesus. This story starts out pretty sane, then suddenly takes a turn I would have never expected. But don’t look for any spoilers here, cuz that’s all you’re getting. 🙂

There were a lot of “someones” she never thought life would turn her into by now.
Widow.
Single mom.
Entrepreneur.
Vice President of the United States.
Annnnd there went the possibility of calm.

One of the things that initially attracted me to this story, aside from the power exchange dynamic, was that the heroine is the Vice President of the United States. A strong woman in one of our nation’s highest offices, right out there in the spotlight and proud of it. Accepted. Respected. Hell yeah. But when I got to know Tracy Rhodes better, I realized this character could have been me. So many similarities—the stage fright, the self doubt, the caring nature, the tigress claws, the penchant for kink—and she’s still both successful and likable. Tracy Rhodes is both inspiring as a woman and beautiful in embracing her submission to her Dragon.

Dammit, something about her called to every Dominant bone in his body—which was just about every bone in his body. No. She just…pulled at him, period. Brought instincts to the surface of his blood, primal and feral and needing, especially with her new reference. I’m a mother. Like that was the most important burden on her shoulders, not being second-in-command of the free world. She didn’t mean it, of course. She couldn’t. But for the few moments he let himself believe it, he was entranced. Captivated. Ensnared by the Tigress…

Captain John Franzen is a beast of a character. This man has honor and determination and self-sacrifice oozing out of his GI Joe-muscled body. His inner monologue is so intense I had trouble following his thoughts at times, and he harbors his own slew of demons. Keeps them all locked down tight so he can waltz in and recalibrate himself anytime he gets too comfortable in life.

“We were talking about you,”she finally prompted. “And being…scared.” She paused to insert a puzzled pout before the last word. “And I still can’t believe I just did that.”
“Did what?”
“Mashed you and scared into the same sentence.”
He let out a snort. “I’m scared all the time, woman.”
“The hell you are.”
“We all are.” He shifted his hold, gliding his thumb up to her brow line, giving him an excuse to lock his gaze with hers again. “Fear is part of the human experience. What turns the experience into triumph is what a person does with their fear…how they channel it.”

As a couple, John and Tracy are explosive, both between the sheets (or even in the dungeon) and in their complicated relationship. Navigating the balance of the power dynamic between a heavy D/s sexual need, standing on equal ground for the important conversations, and the demands of Tracy’s leadership in office is a complicated dance that author Angel Payne makes look simple.

“Okay, hold up a second.”
He ticked up one side of his mouth. Added a defined thrust of his hips. “I’ll hold you up anywhere, ma’am.”
“Thank you, Sir,”—her succinct scowl clarified the title was now a term of ire instead of endearment—“but I need a little elucidation here.”
“And I’d like to help you out.” He calmed his cock and settled his smirk. “By all means, let’s elucidate.”
Her scowl tightened. “That should not turn me on so much.”
His own brows hunched. Couldn’t say the same thing about his dick this time, but that was all on her. “What shouldn’t?”
“You. Saying ‘elucidate’.”
“You know ‘elucidate’just became my favorite word, right?”

Ready For His Rule is the tenth book in the Wild Boys of Special Forces series, and from start to finish, it doesn’t pull any punches. I had no problem stepping into this already mature story world and enjoying the read, so you can certainly read this as a standalone. In fact, I now really want to go back and read a few of the other books (especially the two menages). The introduction of characters from the other books is handled with care and respect for the focus couple of this story, and each character introduced is unique, easy to remember and tell apart.

But John Franzen wasn’t any other man.
To the point that she gazed at him now, angling his face over hers, and realized she didn’t even see a man.
She saw a dragon.
A creature born of fire and brought by magic to save her life— in many more ways than one.
She saw thunder.
A force crackling the skies of her psyche, bringing back the lightning of her passion and the storm of her new awakening.
She saw her Dominant.

Angel Payne’s writing style is Kristen Ashley meets Joey Hill, emotional and introspective—more about the feelings the words inspire than the words themselves. And boy does this story invite you to feel. Just drags you right into the heart of the crazy and sets up a nice cozy fire. Ready For His Rule is recommended for readers who like stories with BDSM themes and free-tumbling emotions.
